Employing over 600 people in one of the most stunning locations in the country, Queenstown Lakes District Council is at the very heart of a dynamic community. Our services are essential to the people in our region and include infrastructure development, community recreational facilities and planning, building and other regulatory services.

We’re proud to be QLDC, and in response to the growth the district has experienced over recent years, QLDC has itself experienced substantial growth. We genuinely believe in developing our people and providing them with all the tools and opportunities needed to succeed.

About the role:
You’ll be working in an experienced and supportive team and will have opportunities to be involved with a diverse range of policy projects in both lead and support roles. You will be undertaking research, drafting planning provisions and guidelines, and monitoring outcomes. You will gain valuable experience in effective project management and local government plan-making processes. You will be researching and communicating policy advice to a range of audiences, from public enquiries through to Councillor workshops, formal Council agenda items and district plan hearings.

This role is well-suited to a candidate who has a genuine interest in local resource management issues and is motivated to effect change through district plan-making.

Responsibilities of the role:
  • Researching, preparing and communicating policy advice
  • Preparing briefs of work and managing projects undertaken by Council staff and consultants
  • Assisting on projects that are currently underway, including working alongside colleagues for mentoring opportunities
  • Preparing reports for Council meetings and evidence for Council hearings
  • Strong attention to detail and a high standard of written work
  • Being a valued member of a collaborative and supportive team

What we offer:
  • Flexible working practices
  • A host of employee benefits (including discounted access to our health and fitness facilities)
  • A genuine commitment to your training and career development

What you'll bring to the role:
You’ll have a number of years working in a similar role and will enjoy seeing the outcomes of the work you do. You’ll possess strong communication skills and will be confident and capable of presenting to peers and the public. A strong relationship builder and natural people person, you’ll relate well to a wide range of stakeholders.

  • Tertiary qualification in planning or a related discipline
  • Strong working knowledge of the Resource Management Act and allied legislation
  • Experience with district plan reviews in a local government environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
